Hey Oppo,

So I just learned that Sean MacDonald isn’t an employee anymore with Gawker. Tyler Rogoway left at the end of last week. I feel like there have been many more in the last 6 or so months that have left and I’m wondering if anyone knows why? I know the Hulk case didn’t help things but now that Gawker is losing talent that surely doesn’t make things look any better for us moving forward.

Anyone know anything else as to what the heck is going on?

I don’t know who those two people are.

Hey, I’m still upset that Murilee Martin left. Down on the Street made my weekends special. Miss that piece.

The Kinjaverse is collapsing around Oppositelock. Stake a claim in Oppositelock before the hoards rush here.

Sean: main motorcycle journalist for Lanesplitter.

Tyler: main aviation/military writer for Foxtrot Alpha.

Dunno, used to get a lot of my news from gawker, But I can only handle so much Trump, they don’t post much else these days. Jalopnik is a shell of it’s former self......

Agreed on both counts. Only reason I ever visited Gawker is because of Jalopnik.

When Matt was still in charge weren’t we going to have more in depth reporting/investigations/shit like that? Those were some awesome articles. now it seems like all we get are videos from Facebook or something.

Anyone know anything else as to what the heck is going on?

Unless/until someone in the know speaks up, all we have is speculation. Sean has said that he was indeed let go, I don’t know if Tyler was or left of his own accord.

My guess is that Gawker Media is trying to condense around its click-baity web traffic generators, and the more niche/special interest stuff is getting shoved by the wayside.

Shitcanning Sean really pissed me off. Lanesplitter was really fulfilling the promise of being worthwhile motorcycle journalism.

Both gone in the last week. Tyler was a rockstart with the FA stuff and I thought Sean was great at the LS stuff. I know it’s not “cars” but was super cool to learn/read about.

Agreed. I’m annoyed that we haven’t heard anything “official” about any of it. And unfortunately that plus the internet = speculation. Hell it took a week before anyone mentioned the outcome of the Hulk trial - that drove me nuts.

My problem is that if I lose Jalopnik I don’t know where the hell I would go. Autoblog?

I’m all fine for change but Matt or Patrick or whoever needs to address these issues and reassure the readers or tell us where things are going.

Just going on history, I’m fairly confident this decision came from above Patrick or Hardibro. they may not even be able to say anything, at least right now.

Tyler got another job - not sure if that was planned by him or if Jalopnik helped place him out.

what kills me is Sean is talented. His stuff is informative, interesting and well written. If Tyler was let go as well it really begs to question what are they thinking. I don’t know how or why you’d can Sean and keep DeMuro around...I have zero idea why he is so celebrated.

Tyler left on his own accord. He accepted a better offer from Time, Inc. That is straight from Tyler and confirmed by Patrick George .

I personally like Demuro but i totally understand what you’re saying. I think Tyler left on his own accord (which still sucks for us) but Sean was forced out somehow. As I said in another reply I just want to know what the deal is and if anyone else is going to go.

That’s right, I do recall that post. I’m still trying to wrap my head around Sean. I thought he did awesome work for LS and really rejuvenated my personal interest/passion in motorcycling.

Looks like Gawker is shedding weight. Hopefully this doesn’t lead to the unannounced and unceremonious removal of the user driven sites such as Oppositelock. It doesn’t sound like Sean got any warning that he was going to be out of a job so why would they warn us.

True. They’ll never get rid of the user driven stuff - those clicks are free for them and don’t cost them a dime. It’s pure profit.

I just don’t know where they’re going with anything anymore. Gawker used to be more of a news site and now it’s focused on clicks and gossip. Jalopnik has always been irreverent and not-PC and I’m worried that it’s just not bringing in the viewing numbers that Nick needs it to. I recall seeing that Jalopnik generated like 1/10th the numbers of Gawker or Gizmodo which isn’t great from a business standpoint.

I don’t think Tyler was let go, I think he walked. Perhaps he read the handwriting on the wall? Not that he was going to be let go, but that he is leaving what he sees as a leaking, if not exactly sinking, ship.

Sean was more of a niche write whilst DeMuro entertains and infuriates on a much larger spectrum.
